Why upgrade WordPress?
You have a cool website customized according to your need and working great.Next day you found new version of WordPress available. You tend to think the site is working great I do not need latest version.Who will take trouble of upgrading all things and making customizations again.
The thought mentioned above is very obvious. But you should ideally use updated software. The software is updated to remove any bugs and add new functionality. The most important reason of WordPress upgrade is security. So it is better to take pain and upgrade WordPress.
Upgrade WordPress options manually and automatically
WordPress provides automatic upgrade feature.Your WordPress installation keeps checking for new version. If new version is available you get notification. You simply have to click upgrade button to upgrade from previous version to new version. It is very simple process indeed. But sometimes automatic upgrade does not work.If automatic upgrade fails then you will have to upgrade WordPress manually. There are many reasons for auto upgrade failure.PHP Memory error is one of the reason.
I had faced this issue with my upgrade from WordPress 3.1 to WordPress 3.2.I really had tough time after that.Websites on shared hosting often ran into this problem. So I have listed all the steps followed after auto upgrade failure. You can follow this tutorial step by step for a successful manual upgrade of WordPress.I would suggest using automatic upgrade first. In case you have some specific reasons for not using automatic upgrade then use manual upgrade.
Upgrade WordPress manual process
First step is backing up all the files which are not part of WordPress installation. These files include your images, videos, webmaster verification files ,your customized WordPress theme files and all other stuff. You can copy them to directory outside public_html or www (web directory). You can also download these files to your desktop. This is a safety measure. There is no need for it but in case something gets deleted.
Download the latest version of WordPress.Upload the latest version to your WordPress installation.Unzip the downloaded zip.It will create a directory WordPress.
Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
Copy all the files inside newly created directory WordPress and overwrite your current WordPress installation files.Make sure the files are overwritten.
Now refresh your WordPress dashboard.Check which version of WordPress version you are using. You can go to option Dashboard — Home for this. You should see latest version of WordPress.
In case you do not see updated version then make sure you have replaced old WordPress files with new WordPress files. After replacing all the files redo step5.
This simple process should work for most of the cases. In case you have any issues then feel free to post your queries.Consider sharing the post in case you found it useful.
